The chief Greek diplomat, Girogos Gerapetritis, has stated that Greece will abstain from Kosovo's request for membership in the Council of Europe, saying that they will not support this membership.
He said that they will continue to have the same foreign policy and emphasized that they encourage dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade for a peaceful solution.
"As we have done in the past in similar cases, Greece will abstain from this vote. In other words, it will not support Kosovo's request for membership in the Council of Europe for political reasons.
We will continue in this principled logic, we encourage the discussion between Prishtina and Belgrade, we want a peaceful solution to the differences, but it also depends on the will of the parties to be bound by international law" , said Gerapetritis, among other things.
A few days ago, the Political and Democracy Committee of the Council of Europe gave the green light, approving the report of the reporter Dora Bakoyannis, Greek MP, who argued that Kosovo has fulfilled the conditions for membership.
The vote on whether Kosovo will become a member of the Council of Europe will be held next month by the Committee of Ministers of the European Council. The Council consists of foreign ministers of 46 member countries, including countries that have not officially recognized Kosovo's independence.
