The Albanian Parliament, with 140 deputies, is today a mixture of power and capital. Dozens of them come from business, inherited property or a consolidated economic life.
Anita Brahaj from Open Data Albania and journalist Esiona Konomi have commented on the asset declarations of members of the Albanian Parliament in "Top Story"
For Konomi, one of the most surprising names was MP Ana Dajko, who according to her, she did not even plan to go to Parliament.
On the other hand, Brahaj said that she is not even concerned with the declarations of Prime Minister Edi Rama's assets, she said that the greatest interest was when Rama declared his house. For Konomi, the greatest curiosity was how rich Rama really is, remembering the time when he was mayor and declared that he was paid only 3 thousand euros.
Brahaj also commented on the declaration of assets of the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, where, like Rama, according to her, both have served the state and brought in their own income.
Excerpts from the studio interview:
Konomi : The most surprising impression was Ana Dajko. She was very excited when I asked her, she had a wealth that she did not demonstrate. She surprised me. Vasil Llajo too, but it was not a surprise to me because he was known as a businessman. The lady did not even plan to go to Parliament. She has several apartments. If we go to the DP, the richest is former judge Gjin Gjoni. Here I found it impossible not to do the math with the car.
Brahaj : We have businessman MPs on the right wing, we also have others who come from the career of magistrates. It doesn't matter how rich you are, but how much you protect and base this income from a business. John has collaborated with his wife.
Brahaj : Rama's declaration must be old or earlier. He has made a declaration twice, once as mayor and once as a member of parliament. It turns out that every one of his declarations has been published, even in databases that citizens have access to. There was an interest when Rama declared his house, and the income that both spouses had, including income from art, is shown year after year.
Konomi : The biggest curiosity is how rich the prime minister is, since from the statements he said he only had 3 thousand euros when he was mayor, then he was supported by his wife's wealth.
Brahaj : I can't do the math, but Rama has responded several times about his house, there's nothing very impressive. There have been discussions, but I can say that the couple's wealth declaration has never been aggressive.
Brahaj : There is other data. These are coherent accounts given in one year. Asset declarations sometimes show some middle class declaring their accounts. The declaration has never been modest. It was done voluntarily, then it was done by declaration. Berisha's children declared their assets.
We are talking about asset declarations here. We have not done any vetting. This is what the subjects have declared. They have been recording their income for more than two decades, but if we take the two men of the state, they have served in the state and bring their income. But if we take the other family members, they are the upper middle class. I have no comment to make.
