Guns and dollars: how US diplomacy works in Europe
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Joe Biden and Erdogan

The Americans have given the green light to the sale of fighter jets to Turkey and Greece. And Erdogan removed his veto for Sweden's entry into NATO

All satisfied. Turkey will receive 40 F-16 fighter jets requested by the United States from October 2021 and Greece will have 40 F-35s promised by the White House.

And after these developments, Sweden has now overcome the veto set by Recep Tayyip Erdogan and is even closer to the actual entry into NATO (now all that is missing is the yes of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán).

And finally, the American group Lockheed Martin, maker of the F-16 and F-35, is preparing to raise 23 billion dollars from the Turks and another 8.6 billion from Greece.

Total: 31.6 billion.

Yesterday Joe Biden announced the double sale of aircraft to Turkey and Greece, mixing arms and dollars, one of the most useful political-diplomatic formulas for governments in Washington.

Until now, Congress, which has the final say, had opposed the operation with Ankara.

Democrats accused Erdogan of being responsible for numerous human rights violations. Republicans, however, did not accept the fact that Turkey had purchased S-400 missiles from the Russians. The Hellenic lobby also moved to block the "F-16 dossier", run by Manatos, well-connected financiers in the US capital, personal friends of Biden.

Tensions between Greece and Turkey remain high for a number of reasons: from the Turkish occupation of Northern Cyprus (1974), to maritime border disputes.

Both countries are members of NATO and this creates constant political and military problems for the American leadership.

Biden considers the Greeks and Turks essential partners to secure the wing of Eastern Europe. It is no coincidence that the rival countries host two of the largest US bases in the Mediterranean: the Turkish Incirlik air base, the Greek Alexandropolis naval base.

It was inevitable, therefore, that the green light for the F-16 for Erdogan was balanced with a "yes" for the F-35 for Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis./ Corriere della Sera
