A delegation from Denmark and Greenland was welcomed to the White House today, after US President Donald Trump reiterated his desire to take control of the large Arctic island.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart Viviane Motzfeldt left the White House shortly before 12:00 local time. They stayed there for an hour and a half where they spoke with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
There was no joint statement on the outcome of the talks, but the Danish Foreign Minister described the talks as honest and productive.
“We agree to disagree,” Rasmussen said, noting that “we failed to change America’s mind.” Rasmussen announced that Denmark, Greenland and the United States would form a high-level working group to continue discussions.
Trump did not attend the talks, but before the meeting began, he wrote on the Truth Social platform: The US "needs Greenland for national security reasons, it is vital to the Golden Dome we are building."
This was the first time Trump linked the invasion of the autonomous Danish territory to the colossal American missile defense plan.
During the talks, the White House posted a cartoon on Platform X, with the caption: "Where are you going Greenland?" The cartoon depicts two dogs sledding and their two possible destinations: America, symbolized by the White House under the clear blue sky, and China and Russia, represented by the Great Wall of China and Red Square, in the dark.
A US attack on Greenland, which Donald Trump wants and where Denmark is strengthening its military presence, is "impossible", Danish Defense Minister Trolls Lund Poulsen said today.
"It's a very hypothetical question. I think it's unlikely that a NATO country would attack another NATO country," the minister said in response to a question related to this issue.
Copenhagen announced that it is deploying military forces "as of today" as part of exercises in Greenland, which translates into an increased military presence "in aircraft, warships and soldiers, including our NATO allies."
Sweden and Norway announced that they will send officers to Greenland, at the request of Denmark. "Many of our NATO partners and allies will go to Greenland, either tonight or in the coming days," the Defense Minister explained, stating that it is up to each country to announce what it will do.
Germany will also send a military force to Greenland within the week, according to the German newspaper Bild, after the US president insisted that the US must gain control of this strategically important island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
The first German soldiers could arrive in Greenland on Thursday, according to the Bild report, which cites government and parliamentary sources in Berlin.
