The discovery of explosive devices near gas infrastructure in northern Serbia has prompted immediate reactions from authorities and opened debate on the nature of the event and its use in a political context.
The Serbian President announced that two large packages of explosives were found near the village of Velebit, near the gas pipeline connecting Serbia and Hungary. He communicated directly with the Hungarian Prime Minister to inform him of the developments. At the same time, police and military forces established checkpoints in the area and blocked several road axes in the municipality of Kanjiža, checking the terrain with joint patrols.
The case quickly took on a political dimension. Representatives of the Hungarian community in Vojvodina interpreted the incident as an attempt to harm Hungarian interests. They stressed that a possible attack on the pipeline would jeopardize energy supplies and the security of residents in the region.
On the other hand, security analysts raised doubts about the way the information is being presented. They pointed out that in previous cases, authorities have created public alarm without providing full explanations. According to them, the lack of concrete details and the precedent of similar cases require caution in interpretation, writes Danas.
Naim Beshiri, director of the Institute for European Affairs, tells Danas that this looks like “carefully directed Serbian-Hungarian political theater,” aimed primarily at the electorate in Hungary, which has about 20 percent of undecided voters who will decide the election.
"In times of crisis, the message is clear: don't create waves, stick to the known and the stable. Within this framework, Viktor Orban will play the card of his sixteen years of experience, with a demonstration of control through the engagement of the police, the army and the national security organs, with the aim of completely taking over the media space in the next seven days. Thus, even without a formal victory, he can ensure political survival through the way the electoral system has been set up in Hungary ," says Beşir.
The discussion also expanded to the political climate in Hungary. The Hungarian Prime Minister convened the Defense Council after the incident, as parliamentary elections approach. Analysts estimate that such situations can affect the perception of security and be used to strengthen political messages in the run-up to the vote.
Other observers link the development to broader economic and political interests between the two countries. They cite negotiations in strategic sectors and emphasize that security issues often arise in parallel with important decision-making processes.
Institutions are continuing their investigations to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. There is still no definitive version on the purpose and perpetrators of the explosives placement.
