The Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and deputy of the Democratic Party, Agron Gjekmarkaj, has opposed the initiative of the Socialists to establish a commission for disinformation at the meeting of the Conference of Speakers, an initiative which has already gone to the Assembly for approval.
According to him, this initiative has many question marks which make you learn that this commission will be used to control the online media.
Gjekmarkaj added that since the online media are the only ones that the prime minister has not been able to control, he will create this auto censorship tool.
He emphasized that there is no information about Russian influence in the country and that the competent authorities have not issued any information that any of the media in our country has Russian connections. According to Gjekmarkaj, this is a dangerous move which is made in the name of democracy and to its detriment at the same time.
Gjekmarkaj's full speech:
In my view, the Special Commission, among other things, aims to divert attention from the political rhetoric of the moment! But we take it for granted that this is not the problem. To this day, we do not have a report of an analysis by the law enforcement agencies as to how and where this intervention was made in our country! We have several agencies that have the obligation to inform us. We would not like this pretext in the name of "protecting democracy" to turn into a limitation of democracy! We know plenty of cases where attacks on democracies were made using democratic terms and vocabulary. Even freedom itself has been put in danger by those who take the "defense of freedom" as chewing gum. Yes, there are countries like the Czech Republic that have been attacked by Russian propaganda!
If it happens in our country, we have the right to know, where and how?! But such situations on which we can hold long lectures with certainty, the values at the very core of democracy are used to limit the freedom of the media. There was an attempt by this government to make an "anti-defamation package", which was severely criticized by international institutions and organizations.
Then under this pressure he left. There is also a lot of information about how this government has control over many national media! The ones that are mostly out of its control are the online media for which the opportunity can be used to put the mechanism of self-censorship on them in an election year. We remember quite well the concept of "cauldron" and insulting terms for journalists used by the country's Prime Minister.
Some media have been hit directly in our country. I want to remind you that in the name of democracy and reforms for twenty years in Turkey the opposition, the media, the army, elites, newspapers and journalists have been attacked so much that the impression of the triumph of the autocracy was created, but the society reacted, it was not broken, it was not defeated by returning on stage the Opposition as the winner. We are not against anything that increases security in cooperation with our allies, but we have the right to have information and time. We do not hesitate to cooperate together for the common good, but you cannot confront us with the fact that it has been done to humiliate the opposition and put it in a bad light!
